Wasps and Rodents

Wasps and Rodents

Pests can sometimes be categorised as seasonal, for example rodents. We would usually associate rats and mice with colder weather, as they tend to find shelter in our homes and businesses. However, this year, the number of calls to deal with rodent problems have not tapered off like usual. Typical summer pests are wasps. At this time of year, wasps are out in full force as colonies continue to expand. So as you can imagine, we get a lot of phone calls asking us to deal with wasp nests.

-Wasps and rodents become a pest problem when they are looking for food sources-

The warmer weather entices our fruit trees and flower production to increase or simply produce earlier in the year which means more food for pests. If food sources can be found close to a nesting site for these pests, then they are more likely to stay where they are. Fruits are a favourite for both rodents and wasps.

-Rats, mice and wasps come with their own issues-

Rodents are carriers of diseases and due to their rapid reproduction rates, these diseases can spread very quickly. When food sources are readily available, this will only exacerbate the situation and before you know it, you could have a serious rodent problem. Whilst there are many different types of treatments you can buy in shops, it is important to remember that once you have poisoned or trapped rodents, they will need to be discarded immediately. Especially in hot weather, as odours will attract different pests like flies for example.

Wasps are particularly partial to fruits, especially over ripe fruits. They actually become a little drunk when they have consumed these and are most likely to sting you at this point. They will also protect their nest aggressively. So if you think you have a wasp nest in or around your home, it is strongly recommended that you do not attempt to deal with the issue yourself as wasps are able to sting you multiple times and will signal to others that there is a threat so there is a chance of being swarmed.

With this warm weather, it is best practice to make sure that you are putting food waste in bags and stored in a sealed container or bin. This is the most likely source that will attract these pests to your home or business.

Remember, a professional pest controller will be able to deal with the problem from start to finish, leaving you completely pest free!
