Mice Pest Problems & Proofing

Mice Pest Problems & Proofing

Mice can be a real issue throughout the year. However, cold and wet weather does mean that they can search for dry, warm locations to nest and find food. Mice are extremely inquisitive by nature so whilst they may return to the same nesting spots time and time again, they do like to explore their surroundings.

Gaining Entry

Mice are quick and nimble. They are able to fit through the tiniest of holes and are pretty good climbers and jumpers. Places like air vents or holes in brickwork are perfect to enable these unwanted guests to gain entry into your home, garage or shed. Mice are able to gnaw through a variety of materials such as wood, plastic and rubber (just to name a few!). So fence panels, wooden sheds, or seals around windows are no match for these agile intruders.

What do they eat?

Mice are opportunistic feeders; they will eat pretty much anything. They have a preference for grains, fruits and seeds but are not opposed to search through bins for anything they can find. Interestingly, mice can go a significant amount of time without food but do need a source of water to survive. They also eat cardboard, fabrics, carpets and wood but this is more to do with nesting habits rather than sustenance.

Mice Proofing

Ensuring your home, garage or shed is proofed suitably is not only good practice but it will save you money in the long run. Mice are indiscriminate on their chewing behaviours- upholstery, wires, carpets, skirting boards…nothing is off limits to mice and the damage they cause can end up costing a lot of money replacing these items.

We have a few tips that can help you proof your home against these unwanted visitors-

  • Make sure all food sources are stored in sealed containers
  • Ensure all possible entry points (air vents, loose brickwork, loose tiles, holes in shed roof/sides etc) are blocked using suitable materials like metal gauze
  • Keep rubbish bags in bins with lids that close

The best way to deal with any pest problem efficiently and effectively is to call in a professional. We have the knowledge and skills to make sure any home or business has the correct proofing in place to stop pests gaining access.
