Cockroaches In The Winter?
February may seem like a quiet time of year for pest problems but when it comes to cockroaches, it is prime time! Most people have some form of heating on during the colder months which is the perfect environment for cockroaches to become active. Warmth and humidity are key components for cockroaches to thrive.
There are two main species of cockroaches found in the UK; the German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach. There are many other species too, however these are the most likely species you will come across in your home or business setting. They are very quick movers, only coming out at night to feed. Cockroaches can be found under floorboards, under sink cupboards, boiler rooms and drainage systems.
Cockroaches are carriers of bacteria and can cause real health issues. They have been linked to trigger asthma and allergic reactions too. Due to the bacteria they carry, anything they touch should be considered as contaminated. They are able to breed very quickly indeed so if you think you have an infestation you need a professional pest controller.
As always, best practice is to keep all food sources in sealed containers, maintain strict cleaning routines and fix any leaking pipes.
