New Year, New Pest Problem? Devon Pest Control Can Help!

Happy New Year to our customers – old and new. As we move into 2026, now is a good time to think about pest proofing your home, garage or shed. We say prevention is better than cure, so read on below to find out our top tips for proofing different areas of your home against those unwanted visitors this year.

Roof, Chimney & Loft

Starting from the top, checking your roof for any loose tiles is a great start. Pests can squeeze through any cracked or broken tiles with ease and enter your home. Likely looking for warmth and shelter, your loft space is the perfect location. With the warmth from the home, potential access to food and water, plus loft insulation to make nesting material, your loft is like an all inclusive resort. The likely pests you will find here are squirrels, birds, even rats and mice. Whilst you are up there, have a look at the guttering too. Sometimes birds can build nests in them which can cause lots of issues; broken or split guttering, overflow damage, and blockages.

Chimneys can also provide shelter from the weather, especially for birds and even squirrels. It is best practice to check the brickwork regularly and look at investing in a chimney cap. These caps are great for keeping out pests whilst still allowing the chimney to function properly.

The House/Garage/Shed

Taking a walk around the perimeter, have a look to see where pipes and cables enter the brickwork. Ensure that there are no gaps (mice only need the smallest gap to be able to squeeze through). If there are any gaps, installing wire wool or foam can help close them.

Ensure air bricks are covered with mesh to stop any rodents entering and drain guards are in place to stop rats getting in through the drains.

Pest proofing doors and windows seals are not always the first places we think about, but they are important to consider. Any gaps around the frames can be an invitation for pests to enter the home, so make sure that any gaps are filled. There are specialist brush strips to close gaps under doors and insect mesh screens that can be installed on windows during the summer months to keep insects out.

The Garden

Try to keep foliage and trees cut back and tidy. Foliage offers a great hiding place for pests like squirrels, rats and mice. Tree branches left to overhang roofs or guttering can offer a means of access to pests too.

Pest proofing your home may seem overwhelming but it is an important job that needs doing. Devon Pest Control will pest proof your home with ease and to the highest standard. Get in touch today, we would be happy to discuss!
